UPDATE ** Just a calibration issue, works great** Great bike…until I bought one.

The problem discussed in my initial review was ultimately a simple calibration issue. We received the calibration tool from Keiser, conducted the procedure (super easy) and voila…expected performance was restored!
My wife and I have done a series of workouts post-calibration to validate that the fix was permanent and effective; all have been consistent.
I am compelled to admit my previous diagnosis (friction) was incorrect. The noise level must be mostly related to the quietness of our basement.

Mike in customer service was great. He was the one who worked with us and sent the calibration tool.
Tech support started out a bit slow but got came through in the end. (Had I accepted the answer from the first technician, this may not have been the case.) Engagement with a second technician (Paul) was much better. He gave us a troubleshooting step and checked in to see how the calibration worked.
I only wish tech support (i.e. the experts) had recommended a calibration right from the beginning.
Bottom Line: The bike itself is great; solid, smooth, and an excellent workout. If yours arrives in proper working order, you will not be disappointed. If there is an issue, however, may have to be persistent with tech support to get them to engage. Customer service (Mike) is very responsive and Keiser does seem to care about their customers.
***INITIAL REVIEW***
Great bike…until I bought one.
Bottom line up front: The bike we received has a mechanical flaw that makes it difficult to ride (excess resistance). Tech support has not been of any help (they told me nothing was wrong). Customer support (Mike) has been marginally helpful by extending the return period but essentially agreed with tech support about the issue and suggested a wait-and-see approach.
In Keiser’s defense the COVID-19 crisis precludes sending a technician out to my house to check the bike. So, for now, I am giving customer service the benefit of the doubt that they would have done that if they could.
That does not, however, excuse unresponsive tech support. “Ride it for a while and hope it gets better” is not a technically sound approach.
So, for now I am essentially in a holding pattern, making the best of a machine that does not operate as advertised until I can prove otherwise.
I will update this review as the situation evolves.
Read on for the details…
We bought this bike based on a lot of first-hand experience. My wife and I use (used prior to COVID-19) M3i bikes for spin class at my local YMCA; I also ride an older M3 at the fitness center of the university where I teach, and even had one on my submarine for workouts while at sea. Over many, many miles those bikes performed well; smooth resistance, rugged durability, good fit, etc..
The one we received does not work or feel like any other Keiser either one of us has ever ridden.
- It is much more difficult to pedal for a given resistance (gear) or output (watts).
- Gears that are usually sustainable indefinitely are very difficult
- The average wattage for a workout is between 50-60% of normal.
These symptoms point to either a calibration problem (bike is in a higher gear than indicated) or friction problem (bad bearing or something impeding the crank/pulley/flywheel.)
Friction seems the more likely cause. The discrepancy is more pronounced at higher RPM and the bike sounds a bit louder than normal. To be fair, there is less ambient noise in my basement than in any of the other settings but I am fairly certain this bike is whooshing more loudly than it should.
Keiser agreed to send me the calibration tool. If I am lucky, a calibration will fix the problem. But for the reasons listed above, I still think friction is the culprit.
Troubleshooting to date:
- Took videos of the bike while being pedaled to show the sound
o The tech said it sounded normal (I find this dubious given the limited fidelity of cell phone video sound).
- At the request of a different tech, pedaled the bike at 80 rpm in gear 8 and counted the coast down revolutions.
o Nothing heard from tech support…yet.
o This is a better measure but is a bit imprecise as each “gear” on the bike actually represents a range of resistance vice a distinct value.
Continued workouts on the bike have yielded no change in the symptoms.
We are waiting to see what whether the problem gets fixed or we send the bike back and just get a Peleton.

This is the best spin bike on the market.

The only small issue is that I ordered the full package and didn't get the mat that goes under the bike. I was told they will be in stock in June 2020 so I will get mine shipped to me then. Customer service was quick to respond about this and it was appreciated.

The Best Spin bike made...

Covid19 force me to purchase the M3i for home use and I can not be happier. The M SERIES CONVERTER allows you to pair with Zwift, Sufferfest and PainCave any time of day and I never to wait for a class or scramble for a bike.
My doctor said "in 3 years I am giving you an oxygen tank..." in 2005 and I have been spinning ever since.
The fit and finish is Porsche quality.
